In the mountain kingdom
we sought the quiet Gods
- custodians of a long-lived peace
beyond philosophical chatter.
Ah, but even here in the midst of Shangri-la
boisterous monkeys proclaimed themselves great saints
and hurled their wit like dung
against the face of the Void.
In the peaceful gardens
just over the rim of space
we sought the primal patterns
upon which all things are based
- the invisible parents of trees and beasts and men,
the ur-dragons of atoms and dust.
Alas, their very memory is now scattered to Infinity's
considerable corners
and even luminous Angels and Death's own bone-visaged messengers
are unable to state with certainty whether they were ever
anything more than fairy-tale or myth!
In the temple of Ten Thousand Buddhas
I sought to practice the outermost austerities
and the inner rituals of formlessness
- but a host of laughing, chattering gandharvas and dakini's
danced and disported merrilly before me,
seeking to convince me of the non-dualistic nature of reality
until, tiring of the struggle,
I gave way to their fantasie
and learned to love the world
and all its foolish, self-deluding monkey-kings
playing on their drums and pipes.
